Happy 4th of July! Seward and Mount Marathon

For the 4th of July we took a day trip to Seward for their 4th of July celebrations and to cheer on the guys running Mount Marathon.

Mount Marathon is a 3000' Mountain coming straight out of Resurrection Bay at the edge of Seward.  Every 4th of July they do a mountain runners race up and down.  It's about 3.5 miles total with about 1 mile of that in town.  Here is a view of Mount Marathon from town. (and you can see the trail through the Scree above the treeline)

We got there to watch the men's race, here they are headed up the mountain.

The winner came down in about 45 minutes... crazy!  Here he is coming off the mountain.

The winner is a guy named Eric Strabel who has run the race 12 times and been second four of those times.  It was fun to see him win his first one!

Some people come straight down the rocks... they looked like a line of ants sliding down the rock face... At times, I watched with my hands half covering my face because I was sure someone was going to fall!

Here is a link to some of the professional pictures so you can get a better idea of just what this race entails...

Next year, my name is going in the lottery for a spot in the race :)  but there is only a 16% chance of getting a spot or something ridiculous like that.

Finally, they did a 4th of July Parade in Seward.  Here's the fire truck having a couple issues with the banner :)

One thing that was missed... fireworks!  There are no big shows and displays of fireworks anywhere, one downside of it always being light... wouldn't be able to see them anyways!

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July, got to spend some time with family and/or friends and appreciate the great place we live!
